I’ll start by saying I am not a nutritionist. I decided to try bulletproof coffee after doing a lot of reading about its’ health benefits (shoutout to Jess from Bows & Sequins!) and what it can do for your body. At this point, you’re probably thinking exactly what I thought when I first heard about bulletproof coffee… ‘Wait, butter coffee, wtf is that?’
To put it simply, bulletproof coffee is black coffee with grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil mixed in. What’s the purpose of that? To give your body a dose of healthy fats first thing in the morning for prolonged energy and fat loss.
I’d like to also preface this by giving you a little background about my health. This is something I rarely discuss with anyone, let alone on my blog for anyone to see as its’ been a real struggle for me. BUT I want to share my story (which will come in the form of a full blog post soon). In 2008, I was diagnosed with psoriasis, and a couple years later psoriatic arthritis, giving me plaque psoriasis and then very sore, swollen joints in a few places on my body.
For the few couple of years, I’ve noticed myself struggling to drag my ass out of my bed in the mornings. At first, I chocked it up to simply not being a morning person, but it was lasting nearly all day. As I started to educate myself more about the medications I was on, I realized they could be at least partly to blame as one of the side-effects is exhaustion and/or extreme tiredness.
Enter: bulletproof coffee.
When I discovered this magical drink, with promises of prolonged energy through the day, I was sold on at least trying it out. I felt like I’d tried everything under the sun to wake up refreshed and I wasn’t quite sure what to do. So I went for it.
The best part? I’ve been drinking it as a part of my breakfast every morning for two weeks and I’m a believer. Gone are the yawns and heavy eyes until I’ve had a few hours of fully wake up, gone is that 2:30 feeling of being tired in the middle of the day, gone is the need for me to take a pre-workout for my post-work sweat sessions, (mostly) gone is me ready for bed at 8 or 9pm every night. This stuff is no joke.
What’s in it?
- Black coffee (or flavored coffee) of your choice. I use Cafe Bustelo espresso style coffee.
- Ghee butter
- Brain octane oil
- Collagen peptides
**Note that I am a black coffee drinker, so I don’t feel the need to add sweetener to my bulletproof coffee. If you are someone who normally takes sweetener, you’ll probably still need it.
So how do you make it? It’s stupid easy, and will probably save you loads of time in the mornings if you’re someone who makes breakfast everyday. Simply brew a hot cup of coffee, pour it into your Blendtek or Ninja (I use a Ninja and it works great), add 1 Tbsp. of the ghee butter and brain octane oil, a scoop of vital proteins, a dash of cinnamon, and blend for about 5-10 seconds! Pour into your favorite mug, add a dash of cinnamon on top and BOOM. It’s like having your own personal Starbucks right inside your house, but WITH amazing health benefits.
